As one of France's oldest breeds of dog, the dog attracts plenty of attention, largely because of the unique Dogue de Bordeaux characteristics they boast. From their charming personality to their mischievous behaviour, the breed is popular amongst even the world's most fussy pet owners. But why else is the Dogue de Bordeaux adored up and down the globe?
The Typical Characteristics of the Dogue de Bordeaux
Foremost, the Dogue de Bordeaux breed is admired for their highly protective character, an attribute which is triggered easily in the presence of danger or threat. It is believed that this comes from either their stocky and sizeable frame or their past roles as hunting and watch dogs, both of which require bravery. This along with their immense devotion to their owners make the Dogue de Bordeaux the perfect addition to a family seeking comfort from a vigilant and loyal canine companion.
Individuals also commonly describe the characteristics of the Dogue de Bordeaux to be sweet and affectionate towards their family. Contrary to their intimidating appearance and build, the breed is among the most tender and gentle breeds alive, something which the breed make no secret of towards their owner as they shower them with affection. This means that unlike what many might first think, this breed of dog is ideal in an atmosphere with children when introduced properly.
Although, it is worth noting that the Dogue de Bordeaux does not necessarily replicate this behaviour elsewhere and often grows territorial, hostile and stubborn in certain environments, particularly where other dogs are involved. This can become a problem if fights occur or the breed becomes unfriendly. Although, this behaviour can be easily prevented by introducing the breed to socialising with other pets and animals early on instead in a controlled environment.
An additional Dogue de Bordeaux trait is their sluggish and relaxed personality - something that is especially apparent compared to other canines. As a result, the Dogue de Bordeaux is far better suited to short, half an hour walks than they are long and intense exercise, since they do require regular rest and relaxation following their daily stroll. However, don't be fooled, these Dogues are no light work as they are typically challenging to manage and train, especially in their young age!
Perhaps the most significant appeal of the Dogue de Bordeaux, however, is their stunning appearance and striking aesthetic. Dogues sport a hefty shoulder width of around 27 inches, have bulky legs and necks and weigh in as as much as 100 pounds, making them a true spectacle to look at. What's more, the Dogue is adored for their luxurious fawn and mahogany coloured coat which short-haired.
